President Mohammad Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser to the interim government, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by laying wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on Wednesday morning, marking the 55th Independence and National Day.

The President was the first to lay the wreath at 5:50 am, followed by the Chief Adviser at 6:00 am. After laying the wreaths, both stood in solemn silence as a mark of profound respect for the martyrs of the Great Liberation War of 1971.

A smartly turned-out contingent of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force presented a state salute while buglers played the last post.

Later, they signed the visitors' book kept on the memorial premises.

On the night of March 25, 1971, the Pakistani occupation forces launched a brutal military operation called "Operation Searchlight," killing innocent, unarmed Bengalis mercilessly. The bloody war began on March 26, 1971, and after nine months of fighting and the sacrifice of 3 million martyrs, an independent and sovereign Bangladesh was achieved.
