Sajek inferno rages on, over 50 resorts reduced to ashes

A ferocious fire continues to ravage Sajek Valley’s tourist centre in Baghaichhari of Rangamati, defying control efforts even after three and a half hours.
Ignited around 1:00pm on Monday, the blaze left the picturesque retreat in flames and has already consumed more than 50 resorts, restaurants, and shops, leaving the region’s picturesque hub in ruins.
Rahul Chakma Joy, organising secretary of the Sajek Resort Cottage Owners Association, described the scene as catastrophic.
“A massive fire has erupted at the tourism centre’s resorts. Efforts are underway to douse it, but the flames are overwhelming,” he said.
Cottage owner Syed Shaheen added, “The fire is still raging, threatening everything in its path.”
Firefighters are battling to contain the inferno, but the extent of the damage remains unclear.
Idrajit Chakma, finance secretary of the Sajek Resort Cottage Owners Association, confirmed the disaster. “The fire started behind Sajek Montana Resort and spread like wildfire. We estimate over 50 establishments are gone—this number could rise,” he said. Locals and army personnel are battling the flames, with fire services recently arriving from Dighinala to join the fight.
Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shirin Akhter added, “We’re doing everything to douse the fire, but it’s a massive challenge.”
As smoke billows over this beloved tourist destination, the full toll remains unclear—but the scars on Sajek Valley are already deep.
