Preparations underway for JS polls in Dec or June: EC Sanaullah

Preparations are being made to hold the Jatiya Sangsad elections either in December this year or June 2026, Election Commissioner Brigadier General Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah revealed on Monday (February 3).
Speaking to journalists at the office of the Rajshahi Regional Election Officer, he clarified that the timing of the elections is not solely within the purview of the Election Commission but depends on the progress of ongoing reforms.
Sanaullah emphasised that the election schedule hinges on the pace of the reform process. "If the reform process can be expedited, and political parties reach an agreement, elections could take place in December this year," he explained.
"However, if the reforms require more time, the elections may be held in June 2026," he said adding that these timelines align with the Chief Advisor's earlier statements.
When questioned about organizing local government elections, Sanaullah iterated that the Election Commission does not independently decide on such matters. "Our constitutional mandate focuses on national and presidential elections," he stated. "Local government elections fall under the purview of the Ministry of Local Government. Once the government makes a decision, we assist in their organization. The timing and feasibility of these elections will be determined by the government."
Addressing concerns about officials involved in past controversial elections, Sanaullah underscored the principle of accountability. "No one is above the law when it comes to election management," he asserted. "Even those currently serving in the Election Commission are subject to legal scrutiny. If any individual has committed wrongdoing, they may face judicial consequences. This is a matter for the courts, not the Election Commission."
In light of the ongoing Rohingya crisis, Sanaullah urged everyone to remain vigilant. "It is crucial to ensure that genuine citizens are not subjected to harassment while also preventing outsiders from infiltrating," he cautioned. His remarks highlighted the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process amidst security challenges.
The meeting, chaired by Rajshahi Regional Election Officer Delwar Hossain, focused on discussions regarding the voter list update process for 2025 and preparations for the 13th National Assembly elections. Special guests included Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhtar and Additional Superintendent of Police Rafiqul Alam from the district police.
