Bangla Academy announces revised list of Literary Award winners

Bangla Academy has announced a revised list of its Literary Award winners following a review meeting of the Executive Council. The Academy dropped three names from the original list: Selim Morshed (fiction), Faruk Nawaz (children’s literature), and Muhammad Hannan (liberation war). However, no replacements were made due to the Academy's policy.

The revised list includes seven winners of the prestigious award: Masud Khan (poetry), Shuvashis Sinha (drama and dramatic literature), Salimullah Khan (essay/prose), GH Habib (translation), Muhammad Shahjahan Mian (research), Rezaur Rahman (science), and Syed Jamil Ahmed (folklore).

The decision was made during a reconsideration meeting of the Bangla Academy Executive Council held on Wednesday, according to a press release signed by the Academy’s Director General, Mohammad Azam, issued on Wednesday night.

According to Section 9, Chapter 4 of the Bangla Academy Literary Award Policy, the Executive Council is not permitted to consider new candidates for the award, and it reserves the right to reject any recommendations, as stated in Section 10 of the policy, the press release added.

Earlier on Saturday, the Academy had suspended the original list of winners for the Bangla Academy Literary Award 2024 amid controversy.
