Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said that the Election Commission is fully committed and deploying all its resources to ensure free, fair, and acceptable elections.

His remarks came after a meeting with European Union (EU) Ambassador Michael Miller at the Election Commission building on Tuesday (January 28).

“We are preparing to hold elections by deploying all our forces,” the CEC said, emphasizing their dedication to a democratic transition. The EU, he added, inquired about the commission's preparedness, including voter registration timelines and election planning. "They have expressed readiness to assist Bangladesh in this democratic process and are keen to ensure a smooth transition," the CEC noted.

EU’s potential role in election monitoring

When asked about the nature of EU assistance, the CEC said, "They are prepared to send observers and will finalize their plans after reviewing our preparations. If elections are held, they wish to participate as observers to ensure transparency. We have assured them that we are committed to delivering fair elections by utilizing all available resources."

Commitment to reforms and independence

The CEC acknowledged the EU’s emphasis on reforms, saying, "They believe reforms are crucial, though they are offering suggestions rather than imposing pressure." He also highlighted the importance of maintaining the Election Commission’s independence. "We told them that the constitutional freedom of the EC must be upheld. Without an independent Election Commission, the nation’s expectations cannot be fulfilled. They appreciated this stance," he said.

Moving forward with confidence

The EU delegation expressed satisfaction with the Election Commission’s commitment and progress. "They are pleased with our assurances and recognise that we are moving forward with all necessary preparations to ensure fair elections," the CEC affirmed.

The meeting underlines the importance of collaboration and transparency in ensuring a credible electoral process, with both the Election Commission and international partners aligning their efforts for a democratic transition.
