The European Union has expressed its commitment to continuing collaboration with Bangladesh and exploring new opportunities for partnership, including a potential Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

In a recent letter to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasised the EU’s readiness to support a peaceful and inclusive reform process that upholds democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law, paving the way for transparent and credible elections.

President von der Leyen praised Dr Yunus for his dedication to sustainable development, the green transition, anti-corruption efforts, and the digitalisation of financial systems, noting that these priorities align closely with the EU’s existing engagement in Bangladesh.

She highlighted the potential for collaboration under the Global Gateway, which focuses on secure and reliable networks and connectivity. Key areas of investment include railways, water resources, climate adaptation, health, digital infrastructure, and energy.

Additionally, the EU is working with the administration to strengthen key institutions by integrating technical assistance to enhance policy development and governance in critical sectors. "We aim to maximise the impact of our cooperation by sharing EU expertise where relevant," von der Leyen added.

To ensure effective implementation of EU-Bangladesh cooperation, the EU proposed regular strategic coordination meetings to review ongoing programmes, address new requests, and reinforce shared priorities.

The President reiterated the EU’s full commitment to fostering a strong and dynamic partnership with Bangladesh. She also expressed her gratitude for Dr Yunus’ invitation to visit Bangladesh, signalling potential for further strengthening ties in the near future.
