7-college students give ultimatum for DU Pro VC’s resignation
Students from seven government colleges have given a four-hour ultimatum to Dr Mamun Ahmed, the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Dhaka University, demanding his resignation.
They have also called for severing all academic and administrative ties between Dhaka University and the seven colleges within 24 hours and for the formulation of a roadmap to establish an independent university.
The students issued the ultimatum during a press conference held in front of the Shaheed Minar at Dhaka College at 12:00 pm on Monday. This action followed allegations that Mamun Ahmed mistreated the students when they visited his office on Sunday. In protest, the students staged a sit-in under the Nilkhet Arch, where they were reportedly attacked by Dhaka University students and police.
At the press conference, the students presented six demands, which are as follows:
1. The administration of Dhaka University must apologise for the conflict with the students of Dhaka College and seven other colleges, and the Pro-Vice Chancellor Mamun Ahmed must resign.
2. In the incident where Dhaka College student Rakib was attacked with the intention to kill, as well as the brutal police assault on Dhaka College students, the police officers involved, including the Assistant Commissioner (AC) and Officer-in-Charge (OC), must be removed, and departmental action should be taken based on an investigation.
3. Those involved in making obscene remarks and gestures towards female students of Eden College, Badrunnessa College, and other five colleges by Dhaka University students should be brought to justice.
4. The academic and administrative relations between Dhaka University and the seven colleges should be officially severed, and within 24 hours, a framework for the establishment of independent universities, as per the students' demands, should be created.
5. A meeting with representatives from the seven colleges' students, including the Chief Adviser, Education Adviser, Adviser Nahid Islam, UGC members, and the Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, must be arranged immediately to resolve the issue.
6. The roads within the Dhaka University area, which are under the jurisdiction of the City Corporation, must be opened for public access.
During the press conference, student representative Sajib stated that if their demands are not met, they will announce a new course of action.
