Ex-president Hamid sued over attack on students’ protest
A case has been filed against former President Abdul Hamid and his two sons, Rezwan Ahmed Taufiq and Russell Ahmed Tuhin, in connection with an attack on the student protest during the July-August mass uprising.
The case also names former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and her daughter Saima Wazed. In total, 124 individuals have been named as defendants.
The case was filed on Tuesday afternoon (January 14) at the Kishoreganj Police Station by a youth named Tahmul Islam Mazharul.
Mazharul, a BNP worker, stated that he was injured during the protests and, after receiving medical treatment for an extended period, has filed the case now that he is somewhat recovered.
Since the fall of the Awami League government, 11 cases have been filed in Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station, and nearly 50 cases have been filed in the district, with around 4,000 named defendants and over 10,000 unidentified individuals. However, this is the first time former President Abdul Hamid has been named as a defendant in any case.
In the case, Abdul Hamid is listed as the third defendant, with Sheikh Hasina listed first and Sheikh Rehana second.
According to the case statement, the accused, numbered 1 to 20, who were either in the country or abroad, planned mass killings across the country to suppress the student protests. In line with this, defendants numbered 21 to 40 gave orders to ensure no movement could take place in Kishoreganj. To carry out these orders, defendants numbered 41 to 124 provided shotguns, rifles, pistols, crude bombs, and homemade weapons, directing mass killings to suppress the protests.
On August 4 of the previous year, around 12:00 pm, the accused attacked a procession of students and the public on Station Road in the district town. They opened fire, injuring the plaintiff and witnesses. In addition, they threw grenades and crude bombs, creating terror in the area.
Abdullah Al Mamun, Officer-in-Charge of Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the case and stated that a thorough investigation would be conducted, and appropriate legal action would be taken.
