BDR families protest for innocent soldiers’ release
Family members of BDR personnel and members of the anti-discrimination student movement on Wednesday began a procession from the Central Shaheed Minar to the State Guest House Jamuna, the office of Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, demanding the release of innocent soldiers involved in the BDR mutiny. The protesters were stopped by the police when they reached Shahbagh.
Currently, the protesters are positioned in front of the Shahbagh Police Station and the National Museum.
Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) Abdullah Al Mamun of the Ramna Zone told reporters that the protesters are mainly family members of those dismissed following the BDR mutiny. Mahin Sarker, the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, has expressed solidarity with their demands and is advocating on their behalf. Police have been deployed to maintain order.
Sources say people from various parts of the city began gathering at the Central Shaheed Minar early Wednesday morning in response to the call for the protest. After 12:30 pm, they began their march towards the Jamuna. However, when they reached Shahbagh, the police intervened. The protesters are now stationed in front of the Shahbagh Police Station and the National Museum.
Meanwhile, a hearing related to the BDR carnage is scheduled to take place at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court today.
