A man identified as Md Al-Amin, 39, has been arrested for attempting to set fire to the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) Secretariat in Agargaon, Dhaka.

The incident occurred on Monday (January 6) around 1:00pm, when PSC employees apprehended Al-Amin in the underground garage of the Secretariat.

He was later handed over to the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, where a case was filed against him under Sections 380 and 511 of the Penal Code, 1860.

According to a press release from PSC Public Relations Officer SM Matiur Rahman, Al-Amin attempted to cut a thick electric wire in the garage using pliers. Security guard Arifur Rahman noticed the act and raised an alarm, prompting other employees to detain the suspect.

The PSC suspects that the act was a deliberate attempt at sabotage, potentially aiming to destroy critical information, including data on candidates participating in ongoing examinations and those appointed through the commission.

The release said, “If important PSC information were destroyed, it could create significant controversy regarding recruitment and promotions.”

PSC Chairman Professor Dr Mobasser Monem has instructed all PSC officers, employees, and security personnel, including police and Ansar members, to heighten vigilance following the incident.

Al-Amin, who lives in a rented house in Ibrahimpur under Kafrul Police Station, remains in police custody. The case has been registered as Case No. 4 under the Criminal Procedure Code, 1898.
