RMG workers stage demo for increment in Gazipur

The workers of a ready-made garments factory are staging demonstration in Gazipur from Sunday morning, January 5, demanding their annual salary increase.

The workers of IRIS Fashions Limited in Jirani area started demonstrating in front of the factory this morning and later, they demonstrated in front of other factories around the area, forcing the authorities to close these.

Abu Taleb, assistant superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, said additional police have been deployed in the area to keep the situation under control.

According to the salary increment policy for the ready-made garments factory, a labourer who completes one year in the job is entitled to get increment, said the industrial police.

However, the workers of IRIS Fashions Limited who did not complete one year in the service took to the streets today demanding to raise their annual salary.

Ashraful Islam, who works at the factory, said, “Those who got job before are workers, we who do the job for seven to eight months are also labourers. If the salary of others is increased, our wages must be raised.”

Another worker, Najmul Karim, threatened to continue their movement if their demands are not met.
