State appeals against HC order to quash 4 cases against Tarique

The state has filed a leave to appeal in the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, challenging the High Court's verdict that quashed proceedings in four extortion cases against BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

The cases were filed at Gulshan Police Station (three cases) and Dhanmondi Police Station (one case) in 2007.

The appeal was submitted to the relevant branch of the Appellate Division and has been included in the court's agenda for Sunday, January 5, confirmed Additional Attorney General Barrister Aneek R Haque.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, is scheduled to hear the appeals. The state has argued that the High Court’s decision to cancel the cases was incorrect and requires review.

On October 23, 2024, a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain quashed the four cases against Tarique Rahman. The decision came after a final hearing on his petitions seeking to annul the cases, which were filed during the caretaker government era.

Following the High Court’s verdict, the state sought permission to challenge the decision through the leave to appeal now under consideration by the Appellate Division.

The Appellate Division's decision on the appeal will determine the fate of the cases, which have been a focal point of legal and political discourse in the country.
