CEC aims to add youths to voter list for upcoming polls
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has expressed his intention to include more youths in the voter list ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
However, he acknowledged that adjustments to the current process would be necessary to achieve this.
The CEC shared these remarks after a meeting with Election Reform Commission Chief Badiul Alam Majumder at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday (December 29).
The CEC said that the Reform Commission came to consult with the Election Commission (EC) as they are preparing to submit their report to the government soon.
"They wanted to know if we have any recommendations or observations. We discussed various issues, including voter list adjustments and delimitation," the CEC said.
He emphasised the need for reforms to include more youths in the voter list, adding, "Some changes will have to be made. While we did not request specific recommendations from them, we made our needs clear to address delimitation and other election-related issues."
When asked about the possibility of holding elections by December, as some political parties have demanded, the CEC referred to the Chief Adviser's recent remarks.
"The Chief Adviser mentioned that minimal reforms could allow elections by the end of this year, while substantive reforms may take until June next year. We are preparing based on his statement," the CEC explained.
Badiul Alam Majumder, head of the Election Reform Commission, said that the commission aims to submit its reform report by December 31. If delayed, the submission would occur by January 3.
Commenting on the meeting, Majumder said, "As the head of the Reform Commission, I asked the EC if they had any proposals or recommendations. The commission is a key stakeholder, and their input is crucial for ensuring fair and impartial elections."
This collaborative effort between the Election Commission and the Reform Commission is expected to play a significant role in shaping the electoral landscape and addressing pressing concerns for the upcoming elections.
