Attempt to remove Hasina’s graffiti an unintentional mistake: DU
The Dhaka University (DU) administration has expressed regret over an incident in which the proctorial team attempted to erase graffiti of Sheikh Hasina from a metro rail pillar near the TSC area in the early hours of Sunday. The administration described the action as an “unintentional mistake.”
In a press release issued on Sunday, the administration offered its apology.
“With deep regret, we inform that an attempt was made to remove graffiti of Sheikh Mujib and Sheikh Hasina, depicting fascism and tyranny, from two metro rail pillars behind the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University. These graffiti, created during the July Movement, symbolize revolution, resistance, and the destruction of fascism,” the statement read.
The university emphasised the importance of preserving these symbols, stating, “It is our responsibility to keep these memories alive and pass them on to future generations. The incident was an unintentional mistake by the proctorial team, and we sincerely apologise for it. We commit to being more cautious in the future.”
The statement further noted that students, under the supervision of the proctorial team, promptly redrew the erased graffiti later that same night. The DU administration also announced plans to formally recognise the pillar as a “Pillar of Resistance” and vowed to preserve the student body’s expression of opposition to fascism as a lasting symbol of protest.
