3 robbers surrender after bank heist attempt in Keraniganj
Three armed robbers surrendered to law enforcement authorities around 5:30pm on Thursday following a robbery attempt at Rupali Bank's Chunkutia branch in South Keraniganj, Dhaka.
The incident began earlier in the day when the robbers stormed the bank, prompting locals to gather outside upon hearing of the robbery. Local residents quickly took up positions near the bank, alerting law enforcement.
Police, RAB, and other law enforcement agencies swiftly arrived at the scene, cordoning off the building and initiating negotiations. Their coordinated efforts ultimately led to the robbers surrendering without further incident.
No injuries or major damage have been reported, and law enforcement officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attempted robbery.
The robbers had taken 12 bank officials and several customers hostage and are demanding a safe exit.
According to a senior official from Rupali Bank's head office, communication was established with the hostages, who reported that no damage had occurred and no money had been stolen. “The robbers appear to be frightened due to the presence of the public, police, RAB, and army personnel outside the bank. Despite holding hostages, their primary demand is a safe exit,” the official told Jagonews.
Ehteshamuzzaman, the bank's public relations officer, detailed the situation, stating: “The robbers entered the branch around noon, disarmed staff and customers, and confiscated their mobile phones, initially cutting off communication. Some officials managed to send messages alerting us to the incident. Law enforcement is working to ensure everyone’s safety, and no damage has been reported so far.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of South Keraniganj Police Station Mazharul Islam confirmed that plans are underway for a tactical operation to resolve the crisis. “Discussions are ongoing among the forces to coordinate the operation,” he added.
Efforts to negotiate with the robbers and ensure the safe release of hostages are continuing. Security in the area has been tightened as law enforcement agencies work to bring the situation under control.
