RNPP: Equipment installation completed, waiting for performance test
The construction of infrastructure and installation of equipment for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) in Pabna has been completed, paving the way for performance tests before power generation begins.
This milestone was announced by Rosatom, the Russian state-owned company implementing the project, in a press release.
According to Rosatom, the initial phase of activities to bring the reactor plant to operational parameters began on December 18. During this stage, the equipment and processes will undergo rigorous testing. The reactor coolant pump will be started and evaluated for the first time, and the reactor plant will be tested under specified parameters without nuclear fuel. If all components operate as designed, the first unit will be ready for power generation.
Rosatom Deputy Director General Andrey Petrov emphasised the importance of this stage, stating, "We have entered the final preparations for the start-up of the first unit. This is a crucial phase during which we will conduct extensive tests to ensure the system performs as expected in all operating modes."
He added, "We are committed to fulfilling our obligations and ensuring the reliability and safety of this technology. Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant will significantly contribute to the country’s economy and benefit future generations."
Dr. Zahed Ul Hasan, Project Director of the RNPP, outlined the next steps: "Numerous tests must be conducted before the final start-up, a process expected to take about a month. If the tests confirm that everything is functioning correctly, the fuel loading process will commence."
The timeline also includes inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) observer team. Once the IAEA gives its final approval, the first unit will begin electricity production.
