Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has voiced strong objections to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks on the 1971 Liberation War.
In a statement on his verified Facebook account, Dr Nazrul wrote, "I strongly protest. December 16, 1971, was the day of Bangladesh's victory. India was an ally of this victory, nothing more."
His response came after Prime Minister Modi posted on social media commemorating Victory Day. Modi's message read: "Today, on Victory Day, we honor the courage and sacrifice of the brave soldiers who contributed to the 'historic victory of India' in 1971. Their selfless dedication and unwavering determination have saved our nation and brought us glory. This day is a tribute to their extraordinary heroism and indomitable spirit. Their sacrifice will forever inspire generations and will be deeply embedded in the history of our nation."
Modi’s statement subtly implies that the Liberation War of Bangladesh was primarily India’s war and downplays Bangladesh’s pivotal role. Notably, the post makes no direct mention of Bangladesh, the country observing Victory Day, said Nazrul.
Nazrul’s comments highlight this perceived omission and reaffirm Bangladesh's ownership of its hard-fought victory. His remarks echo sentiments of national pride, emphasizing that while India played a supportive role, the triumph of 1971 remains unequivocally Bangladesh’s achievement.
