70 held for attacks on minorities after Aug 5: Shafiqul

In the aftermath of the Awami League government's fall, 88 cases have been filed between August 5 and October 22 related to attacks on minorities. 

A total of 70 individuals have been arrested in connection with these incidents, said Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.

At a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Tuesday (December 10), Shafiqul said: "We are providing a minority-related update today. Seventy individuals have been arrested in cases of violence against minorities. Eighty-eight cases have been filed, and all those responsible for these heinous acts will face justice."

Deputy Press Secretaries Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Apurba Jahangir were also present during the briefing.

Shafiqul emphasised the government's commitment to addressing these crimes, saying: "We will arrest everyone involved in such acts of oppression. Updates will be provided on incidents from Chittagong, Sunamganj, and Narsingdi."

The press secretary further clarified that while some of the victims were minority community members, others were individuals associated with the former ruling party, the Awami League.

"Not all victims were from minority communities. Some held positions within the ruling party, which made them targets. However, we treat all such acts as crimes and are addressing them with the utmost seriousness," he added.
