Bangladesh suspends consular services in Agartala

Bangladesh has suspended consular services at its Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, following an attack on the mission premises.

The interim government made the decision on Tuesday (December 3), citing security concerns. 

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said, “For security reasons, consular services at the Assistant High Commission in Agartala have been suspended. Consequently, visa services from the mission will remain closed until further notice.”

On Monday afternoon (December 2), the Assistant High Commission in Agartala was attacked by protesters, resulting in vandalism, damage to property, the destruction of the flag stand, and the burning of Bangladesh’s national flag—a deeply symbolic and offensive act.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka, Pranay Kumar Verma, for an urgent meeting to lodge a strong protest.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry has also sent a formal note to India, demanding enhanced security for all Bangladesh missions across the country, including the one in Agartala. Officials confirmed that the note was sent on Monday evening, urging Indian authorities to take robust measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The suspension of consular services is expected to remain in place until the security situation improves and assurances are received from Indian authorities.
