88.7% want police free from political influence: Survey
The Police Reform Commission has released the results of a public opinion survey titled "what kind of police do we want?" on its official website.
The survey revealed that 88.7% of respondents want a police force free from political influence, while 86% expressed a preference for a neutral police force committed to upholding the rule of law. A total of 24,442 individuals participated in the survey.
The findings were disclosed in a press release signed by Abu Momtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed, Additional Secretary of the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Member Secretary of the Police Reform Commission.
The press release stated that recent criticism, both in Bangladesh and globally, regarding the violent actions of some police officers in suppressing anti-discrimination student protests has made 'police reform' a pressing demand of the time. In response, the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh established the Police Reform Commission to address necessary reforms within the police force. The commission is currently operational.
As part of its efforts, the commission conducted a public opinion survey titled "what kind of police do we want?" to gather feedback from the general public.
