Indian media on smear campaign over minority issues: Touhid
Md Touhid Hossain, the Foreign Affairs Adviser to the interim government, accused sections of the Indian media of spreading propaganda about minority issues in Bangladesh.
He made this statement during a diplomatic briefing at the State Guest House Padma on Monday, December 2, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Later, speaking to reporters, the advisor highlighted the government’s commitment to preserving communal harmony and countering misinformation.
Touhid Hossain noted that certain media outlets have sought to create misconceptions about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus. "The media, I’m not targeting any specific country’s outlets, have attempted to lead the narrative toward negativity. Therefore, we felt it was necessary to clarify the situation to diplomatic representatives so they could understand the reality," he said.
The adviser emphasised that ‘communal harmony is an integral part of Bangladeshi society’, and the government remains resolute in ensuring that no one is persecuted due to their religious identity.
He also pointed out the peaceful observance of festivals such as Durga Puja as evidence of the administration’s success in maintaining harmony, despite isolated incidents.
When asked which media were responsible for spreading misinformation, Hossain identified ‘Indian media’ as the primary source, adding that other outlets have amplified these narratives.
Responding to whether the government plans to send a strong message to India, Hossain said, "This government will not tolerate any form of communal unrest, regardless of the community involved. Everyone will be treated equally under the law. If anyone tries to create chaos, they will face strict action. We will also protest any unwarranted reactions officially."
The briefing included representatives from numerous diplomatic missions, including one from the Indian embassy.
Hossain clarified that the focus of the discussion was on the media narrative, not India as a nation, iterating the government's position against communal activities and its intent to maintain peace and order.
Representatives from Indian High Commission were also present at the briefing.
