Cyclone, cold wave threats loom over Dec

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast the possibility of a cyclone developing in December, along with cold waves in the western and northern parts of the country later in the month.

According to the BMD, 1-2 low-pressure systems may form over the South Bay of Bengal and its surrounding areas. Among these, one may intensify into a cyclone. Additionally, 1-2 cold waves are likely, with mild temperatures ranging from 8-10°C and moderate temperatures from 6-8°C expected in the second half of December.

The long-term forecast was announced during a meeting of the expert committee at the Dhaka Storm Warning Center on Sunday, December 1. The session was chaired by Md Mominul Islam, Director (Current Responsibilities) of the Meteorological Department.

The forecast predicts a gradual decrease in both day and night temperatures as December progresses, with temperatures expected to remain within normal ranges. Rainfall across the country is also projected to be normal for this time of year.

The BMD highlighted the likelihood of moderate to dense fog in river basins during the late-night and early-morning hours. Light to moderate fog may occur in other areas. Rivers across the country are expected to maintain normal flow throughout the month.

The agricultural weather forecast indicates daily evaporation rates of 2.50-4.50 mm and an average of 6.50-8.50 hours of bright sunshine per day, which may influence crop conditions during the month.

Farmers and citizens are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as weather conditions evolve, especially concerning potential cyclonic activity and cold spells.
