New IGP takes charge

Baharul Alam has officially assumed the role of Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP). He succeeded outgoing IGP Md Mainul Islam on Thursday.

Enamul Haque Sagar, Assistant Inspector General of Police (Media and Public Relations) at the Police Headquarters, confirmed the development.

The Ministry of Public Administration had issued a notification on Wednesday announcing Baharul Alam's appointment as IGP. The appointment, made under Section 49 of the Government Service Act, 2018, was facilitated by the Contract and Foreign Recruitment Branch of the ministry.

According to the notification, Baharul Alam, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Bangladesh Police, has been appointed on a contractual basis for a two-year term, effective from the date of his joining. The appointment is conditional upon his resignation from any other profession, business, or employment with any government, semi-government, or private organization.

Baharul has an extensive career history. He served as the head of the Special Branch (SB) from 2007 to 2008 and later held roles at the Police Headquarters. Between 2009 and 2013, he worked as a Police Liaison Officer at the United Nations Headquarters in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. In 2015, he served as a Senior Police Advisor for the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Afghanistan. Additionally, he undertook assignments in Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone.

Baharul retired in 2020 after being denied promotion twice. His hometown is Tarail Upazila in the Kishoreganj district.
