Labour unrest will be resolved if receiver takes over Beximco: Labour secy
Labour and Employment Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman on Sunday said the ongoing labour unrest will be resolved if a receiver (administrator) takes over the Beximco Group.
He said this in a press conference on the progress of the Youth and Sports, and Labour and Employment Ministries of the interim government in the last 100 days.
The workers at the Beximco Industrial Park are staging demonstrations for the second day by blocking the Chandra-Nabinagar highway in Sarabo area in Gazipur city demanding arrears.
In this regard, Shafiquzzaman said the government has to pay Tk 82 crore a day on the account of Beximco workers’ wages and a receiver will soon be appointed for the group.
“Today the Chief Adviser had a meeting with several advisers at his office and from there, I was given some directives. After that, I will sit with the commerce and finance adviser and will discuss how to resolve the unrest,” he said.
The labour secretary also said he met with the Bangladesh Bank governor who assured him that the problem will be solved when a receiver takes control of the group completely.
Mentioning that Beximco has huge liabilities, he said the business conglomerate itself will have to solve its problem. “How can the problem be solved by taking over the factory, we are making the arrangement.”
