Clash erupts over Anti-Discrimination Student Movement committee in Sunamganj
Sunamganj witnessed a clash between two student groups on Thursday (November 14) over the formation of the anti-discrimination student movement committee, leaving at least five people injured.
The incident took place at the District Shilpakala Academy premises during a committee introduction and discussion meeting organised in the academy’s hall.
Students from various upazilas in Sunamganj gathered at the location when a group of students, reportedly "deprived" of committee positions, launched an attack wielding homemade weapons.
A confrontation ensued between the two groups until police and army personnel arrived to restore order.
Tanvir, a member of the dissenting group, expressed frustration, claiming the committee was formed without consulting original members. "This is really unfortunate," he added.
Emon, convener of the Sunamganj anti-discrimination student movement, condemned the attack, saying, "If they had any complaints about the committee formation, they should have contacted the central committee. Instead, they disrupted a peaceful meeting with weapons."
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazmul Haque of Sunamganj Sadar Police Station confirmed the incident, attributing it to a dispute over committee appointments. "The police and army quickly intervened to bring the situation under control," he said.
