Pilkhana carnage re-investigation to begin soon: Home Adviser

Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday indicated that while it was uncertain if a new commission will be formed to investigate the 2009 Pilkhana carnage, a re-investigation will certainly take place, and it will proceed swiftly.

The adviser made this statement after visiting the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters at Pilkhana.

The tragic mutiny in the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on February 25-26, 2009, led to the murder of 74 people, including 57 army officers, at the Pilkhana headquarters. Following this, the force was renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh, with changes to its logo and uniform to mark a new beginning.

On November 5, 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced 150 BDR members and two civilians to death and handed life sentences to 160 others involved in the incident.

The High Court later confirmed the death penalty for 139 of the accused on November 27, 2017.

Earlier, on September 2, Adviser Jahangir stated his personal commitment to ensuring justice for the 2009 tragedy. "Not only as an adviser but also as a former member of the army and as a concerned citizen, I want a fair trial for those responsible for the BDR killings. The re-investigation process will begin soon," he had affirmed.
