Jail Killing Day today
Jail Killing Day is being observed across the country on Sunday, marking the assassination of four prominent Awami League leaders in prison.
On this day in 1975, four key organisers of the Liberation War—Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, AHM Qamaruzzaman, and Captain Monsur Ali—were brutally murdered at Dhaka Central Jail. The nation is commemorating this dark chapter in its history by paying tribute to these four leaders. Various political parties and organizations throughout the country are observing this solemn day.
The day after the assassination of the four leaders, the then Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons, Kazi Abdul Awal, filed a murder case at Lalbagh Police Station. On October 20, 2004, Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Md Matiur Rahman announced the verdict in this case.
The court sentenced the absconding individuals—Risaldar Moslem Uddin, Sentry Marfat Ali Shah, and Sentry Abul Hashem Mridha—to death. Additionally, 12 others, including Syed Faruk Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bajlul Huda, and AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, received life imprisonment sentences.
Former Minister KM Obaidur Rahman, Shah Moazzem Hossain, Nurul Islam Manju, and Taheruddin Thakur were acquitted in this case.
