Dengue claims 6 more lives in a day, 1,248 more hospitalised

In the past 24 hours, six people have died from dengue fever, bringing the total death toll this year to 277. 

During this period, 1,248 new dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals, increasing the total number of hospitalised cases to 56,911 for the year.  

This information was provided in a press release from the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services on Sunday evening, October 27.  

Of the six fatalities reported, four occurred in Dhaka Division, while one was recorded in Barisal Division and another in Rangpur Division.  

The notification also detailed hospital admissions: 278 patients were admitted to facilities under the Dhaka North City Corporation and 167 to those under the Dhaka South City Corporation. Additionally, patients were admitted from various divisions, including 260 in Dhaka Division (excluding the city corporations), 207 in Chattogram, 107 in Khulna, 51 in Mymensingh, 151 in Barisal, 23 in Rangpur, and four in Sylhet.  

Dengue outbreaks are common during the rainy season, and the situation worsened from June 2023. In 2022, a total of 62,382 people were treated for dengue, resulting in 281 deaths. In 2021, there were 28,429 infections with 105 fatalities. 

The year 2019 saw the highest number of cases, with 101,354 infections and around 300 deaths, including among healthcare workers. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, dengue infections were notably lower.
