Army to set up camps in Mohammadpur to combat crime
In an effort to curb terrorism, extortion, robbery, and theft in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area, the army will set up temporary camps in each housing area starting Sunday. Army personnel will work around the clock from these camps to maintain law and order in the area.
Major Nazim Ahmed, Deputy Commander of the 23rd East Bengal Regiment, announced this at a press conference held early Saturday at the army camp in Bosila. Previously, the army launched operations across Mohammadpur, leading to the arrest of 45 individuals.
At the press conference, Major Nazim stated, “To control the law-and-order situation in Mohammadpur, temporary camps will be set up in various housing areas starting Sunday. A single camp will cover two to three housing areas, from which army personnel will work to control the law-and-order situation across the entire area.”
He added that the 23rd East Bengal Regiment conducted an operation on Saturday. A total of 45 criminals were arrested, including two involved in a daring robbery at Bosila Supershop. Several locally-made weapons in their possession were also recovered.
Major Nazim noted that approximately 27 to 28 teenage gangs were identified in Mohammadpur, with around 30-40 percent concentrated in the Geneva Camp area. Among those arrested, 15 to 16 were "godfathers" or leaders involved in extortion and robbery, causing hardship for office-goers, students, and general residents.
The army officer also noted that members of RAB and the police accompanied them during the operation, and the arrested individuals were handed over to the police station for further legal action.
