Bangladesh reaffirms commitment to global disarmament
Bangladesh has urged for decisive global action against nuclear threats, while promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy for agriculture, healthcare, and power generation.
The call was made by Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin at the First Committee of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday.
He iterated Bangladesh's steadfast commitment to general and complete disarmament, emphasising the need for global peace and security.
The foreign secretary highlighted the inalienable right of all nations to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes while stressing the importance of safeguarding it from misuse. He also encouraged UN Member States to harness emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), for fostering peace rather than conflict.
Addressing the Second Committee of UNGA79, Jashim Uddin emphasised the need for concrete actions to achieve the goals of the "Pact of the Future." His remarks focused on the reform of the global financial system, particularly sovereign debt architecture, as well as stronger climate action.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of tackling illicit financial flows, promoting economic diversification, and building resilience through youth-led solutions, technological investment, and human capital development.
Bangladesh’s appeal at the UNGA reflects its commitment to a secure and prosperous world, driven by sustainable development, equitable economic systems, and peace-oriented technological progress.
