A 24-year-old woman, Irene, was killed by a bus in a tragic accident on Pragati Sarani in Badda, Dhaka, on Wednesday morning (October 9). 

Irene was an employee of fintech company Next Venture. The bus responsible for the accident, belonging to Akash Paribahan, has been seized by the police.

The incident occurred near the Fuji Trade Center, sparking protests by several hundred workers from Irene’s company, who blocked the road in protest, causing severe traffic congestion in the Pragati Sarani area.

Gulshan Traffic Division Additional Police Commissioner (ADC) Zia Uddin Ahmed confirmed the accident, stating, "The victim was crushed under the wheels of an Akash Paribahan bus. The bus has been impounded, and efforts are underway to restore normal traffic. Vehicles are currently being diverted to one side of the road."

Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Abbas of Badda Police Station added that the accident occurred around 9 a.m. While the bus has been impounded, the driver and helper fled the scene. Legal action is being processed, and the road will be cleared once the remaining protesters disperse.
