Sakhawat asks probe into fire on oil-laden ship

Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain has asked to investigate into the fire incident on a ship of the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, BSC, in Chattogram that left one dead.

Sakhawat, also the adviser for textiles and jute, directed the managing director of the state-owned BSC to form a probe body over the incident, a Shipping Ministry handout said on Saturday (October 5).

Earlier around 12:30am today, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation’s oil-laden ship ‘MT Banglar Shourav’ caught fire in Chattogram Port’s outer anchorage.

After around four hours’ frantic effort, the Navy and the Coast Guard personnel and the port authorities brought the fire under control and managed to rescue 47 crew on board.

However, they rescued another one who jumped into the sea and took to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
