Severe traffic congestion on Dhaka-Chattogram highway
Heavy traffic congestion has gripped the Narayanganj section of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, causing severe disruption for passengers, particularly women and children, who are stranded in the rain.
On Thursday morning (October 3), vehicles were stalled for extended periods at various points along the highway, preventing passengers from reaching their destinations on time. Many commuters were forced to walk in the rain to get to work.
Traffic jams first began on Wednesday evening and persisted overnight. Currently, the Chattogram-bound lane from Sanarpar in Siddhirganj to the Keodhala area is experiencing the worst of the congestion, primarily due to vehicle breakdowns in several locations along the route.
Gafur Hossain, an office worker caught in the jam, said, "I left Shanir Akhara at 7:00am to get to work. I barely reached Kanchpur Bridge, and beyond that, it’s impossible. I’ve missed work today."
Another frustrated passenger, Abdur Rahim, stated, "I don't see any visible action by law enforcement to manage the situation. I've been stuck in traffic since morning. It took an hour just to reach Kanchpur Bridge from Mauchak Bus Stand."
Traffic Inspector Abu Nayeem of the Shimrail Camp, Kanchpur Highway Police, explained that breakdowns at Keodhala and Langalband on Wednesday night worsened the traffic.
He also noted that some vehicles had entered the wrong lane, escalating the situation.
"We've removed several vehicles already, and efforts are underway to clear the remaining ones. The rain has made our work a bit challenging, but our teams are on the highway to restore normal traffic flow. Hopefully, it will be resolved soon," Nayeem added.
