Yunus seeks Gates Foundation's support for Bangladesh health sector

Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has urged the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to increase its support for Bangladesh's health sector.

The request was made during a meeting with Mark Suzman, CEO of the foundation, at the United Nations headquarters on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.

According to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Prof Yunus asked the foundation to expand its assistance not only in health but also in other sectors of Bangladesh. In response, Suzman expressed a positive interest in increasing the foundation's involvement in the country.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is already active in Bangladesh, supporting vaccine production and partnering with ICDDR,B, an international health research organisation based in Dhaka.

The press secretary noted that the foundation’s increased interest signifies potential improvements in health services and the creation of new job opportunities in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Prof Yunus also encouraged the foundation to explore social business initiatives beyond the health sector.
