A lieutenant of the Bangladesh Army was killed during an operation by joint forces in Chakaria of Cox's Bazar early Tuesday.

The army officer, Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar Nirjon, was posted at Ramu Cantonment in Cox's Bazar.

The ISPR in a press release said a Bangladesh Army patrol team responded to a robbery late at night in East Maijpara, Chakaria, Cox's Bazar, when the suspected robbers attempted to flee.

Lieutenant Tanzim Charwar Nirjan, leading the chase, was fatally stabbed by the robbers’ gang during the incident.

The ISPR said the incident occurred around 3:00am on September 23. The patrol team from Chakaria army camp responded swiftly to a report of a robbery in East Maijpara in Dulahazara union. As the patrol conducted its raid, the robbers, numbering 7-8, tried to escape.

Lieutenant Tanzim pursued the fleeing robbers, but during the chase, he was attacked and stabbed in the neck, suffering severe injuries. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead after being taken to Malumghat Memorial Hospital.

The ISPR noted that Lieutenant Tanzim, born in Tangail, was a young and promising officer.

He was commissioned into the Army Service Corps (ASC) on June 8, 2022, after completing his studies at Pabna Cadet College and graduating from the Bangladesh Military Academy with the 82nd long course.

Following the attack, three robbers were arrested, and a locally-made gun along with six rounds of ammunition was recovered. Three additional suspects were also detained for questioning.
