Hundreds of ready-made garment workers blocked the Tongi-Ashulia road in Savar, Dhaka, on Monday, demanding their unpaid salaries. The workers of Generation Next Garments took to the streets in the Narsinghapur area to stage demonstration.

The protesting workers stated that Generation Next Garments has been closed for the past two months without paying their due salaries, which has left us unable to pay our house rent. Around 5,000 to 6,000 workers are living in uncertainty. Although the administration promised to pay our dues, they have not implemented this, forcing us to take to the streets.

Meanwhile, in the open factories, workers began their shifts at 8:00 am. Although production continued in most factories, workers from at least nine factories protested by not reporting for work, demanding an increase in wages. In response, the factory management announced holidays for these nine factories.

Throughout the industrial area, members of the RAB, police, and army are stationed in front of the main gates of various factories. Law enforcement personnel are deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.

Ashulia Industrial Police-1 Superintendent Sarwar Alam said that 43 factories are closed indefinitely, with general holidays also declared at nine other factories. Some factory workers are protesting, and we are working to resolve the matter through discussions with the BGMEA and the factory owners.
