Lightning kills 5 in Sylhet, Sunamganj

Five people were killed after being struck by lightning in Sylhet and Sunamganj on Saturday.

The victims were Nahid Ahmed, 17, a resident of Agfoud village, Abdul Mannan, 45, of Vitrikhel Borband village under Jaintapur upazila, Nuruddin, 60, of Doloimati of Kanaighat Pourasabha and Kala Miah, 28, of Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet and Deen Islam, 65, of Sirajpur Charpara village under Bishwambhar Pur upazila in Sunamganj.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jaintapur Police Station Tajul Islam said thunderbolt hit Nahid and Mannan while working in their field around 1 pm.

Later, they were rushed to Jaintapur Upazila Health Complex by locals where the duty doctor declared them dead.

Meanwhile, OC of Kanaighat police station Jahangir Alam Sarder said Nuruddin was struck by lightning near a wetland and Kala Miah was injured by lightning while he was working in a paddy field this afternoon.

Both were taken to the Kanaighat Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

In Sunamganj, farmer Deen Islam died after being hit by a thunderbolt as he was working in his crop field at noon, said Md Kawser Alam, OC of Bishwambhar Pur police station.
