Tripartite deal to import power from Nepal soon: Adviser

Bangladesh is set to finalise a tripartite agreement with Nepal and India to import hydropower from Nepal using Indian transmission lines, said Md Fouzul Kabir Khan, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser. 

Speaking as the chief guest at a reception marking Nepal's National and Constitution Day at a city hotel on Friday evening, he announced that an interim government delegation will visit Nepal soon to sign the agreement.

The deal will enable Bangladesh to import 40MW of electricity from Nepal via India, six years after the countries first reached an understanding on energy cooperation. 

At the event, hosted by the Nepal Embassy in Dhaka, Adviser Khan praised the growing collaboration between Bangladesh and Nepal. 

He emphasised the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, connectivity, and people-to-people relationships.

Nepal's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, highlighted the significance of Nepal’s National and Constitution Day, marking the adoption of a democratic and inclusive Constitution in 2015. He expressed Nepal’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh during its transition period and confirmed that the tripartite electricity deal is expected to be concluded soon.

Ambassador Bhandari also stressed the importance of leveraging solidarity and cooperation between the two nations to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth for mutual benefit.

The event, attended by political leaders, government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and members of the Nepali community in Bangladesh, featured a cultural programme showcasing Nepali folk dance performances.
