Mob lynching at DU: 6 students confess to involvement

Six Dhaka University (DU) students arrested in connection with the lynching of Tofazzal Hossain, a mentally disabled person, in Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall, have confessed to their involvement in the murder.

The six students-Md Jalal Mia, Sumon Mia, Md Mottakin Sakin, Al Hussain Sazzad, Ahsanullah, and Wazibul Alam-have been sent to jail after recording their statements.

Muhamamd Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the matter on Friday night.

He said the six DU students confessed to their involvement in the murder of Tofazzal Hossain, and after recording their statements, the court ordered them to be sent to jail.

He also stated that the Tofazzal murder case is being investigated very seriously and closely by the DMP. Police efforts are ongoing to arrest other individuals involved in the incident and bring them under the law.

Earlier, Mohammad Amanullah, a supervisor at the university’s estate office, filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station accusing unknown individuals of lynching Tofazzal.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), on Wednesday night (September 18), some students caught Tofazzal at the gate of Fazlul Haque Hall, suspecting him to be a thief. They beat him with stumps, hockey sticks, and rods, leaving him unconscious. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Eyewitnesses described the brutal torture Tofazzal endured, stating that the attackers inflicted severe injuries, even removing flesh from his body.

Tofazzal hailed from Kanthaltali Union of Patharghata Upazila in Barguna.
