Landslides kill 6 in Cox's Bazar

Six people, including three members of a family, died in separate incidents of landslides in Cox's Bazar's Sadar upazila and at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila early Friday.

The deceased were identified as Abdur Rahim, a resident of Block E-2 of 14. no. Rohingya camp at Palongkhali in Ukhiya, his two children Abdul Hafeja, 10, and Abdul Wahad, 4, Akhi Moni, wife of Mijanur Rahman, of South Dikkul in sadar upazila, and their two children Zannat Naima and Latifa Islam.

A landslide occurred at Block E-2 of 14 no. camp in Ukhiya due to heavy rain and a chunk of mud fell on the house of Abdur Rahim, leaving him and his two children dead, said Kabir Ahmed, a community leader of the camp.

Ukhiya police station's officer-in-charge Md Shamim Hossain said three members of a family died in a landslide triggered by heavy rains at 14 no. Rohingya camp.

Police personnel were sent to the spot but it is becoming difficult for them to move, he said.

In Sadar upazila, the house of Mijan was hit by a landslide caused by heavy rain and his family members were trapped after the incident, said Tipu Sultan, chairman of Jhilongja union.

Later, Fire Service personnel recovered the bodies of Mijan's wife and two children, Tipu said.
