Ex-IGP Al-Mamun shown arrested in 4 more cases
Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has been shown arrested in four more cases filed over the killings that occurred during the anti-discrimination student movement in the capital.
The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court passed the order on Thursday in response to a petition to show him arrested in the cases.
Earlier on September 3, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested the former IGP.
Many members of the police force he led during the anti-discrimination student movement have been accused of indiscriminately firing on protesters. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, he went into hiding and was subsequently forced into retirement from his position as IGP.
On July 5, the government extended Al-Mamun’s tenure as IGP by one year.
On 30 September 2022, Al-Mamun first took the charge as the country’s 31st IGP. Later, he was appointed on contractual basis for a period of one and a half years from January 12, 2023 to July 11, 2024.
