12 burnt in Ctg ship-breaking yard explosion

At least twelve workers were burnt and several others injured when a fire broke out following an explosion at a ship-breaking yard in Sitakunda upazila, Chattogram, on Saturday.

The incident occurred at SN Corporation Yard in the Kumira Sonaichari area of the upazila around 12:30 pm. 

The fire service said, the fire erupted after an explosion at the SN Corporation yard while a ship was being dismantled. Two units of the fire service rushed to the spot and started working to douse the fire.

Officials from SN Corporation Yard said that the six critically injured workers were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while the others were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Kamal Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sitakunda Police Station, stated that several people were burnt while cutting a ship at SN Shipyard in Sonaichari. “We are on the spot. The fire is almost under control,” he added.

Brigadier General Mohammad Taslim Uddin, director of Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said that twelve people have been brought to the hospital in critical condition. They have been admitted to the burn unit, with many sustaining 80-90 percent burns.
