Home Ministry warns against public security breach

The Home Ministry has issued a stern warning against acts of "vigilantism, forced resignations, looting, extortion, and pressuring police to indiscriminately file charges" in the wake of the recent overthrow of the authoritarian government.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, the Home Ministry emphasized that following the student-led mass uprising that led to the ousting of the Awami League government on August 5, an interim government has been established. The previous regime's brutal crackdown on the uprising resulted in significant loss of life and numerous injuries. For years, the Awami League government faced widespread criticism for human rights abuses, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and other forms of oppression, which fueled deep public resentment.

The interim government, committed to addressing these past injustices, has vowed to bring those responsible to justice. The notice highlighted that the government has invited the United Nations to conduct an independent investigation, ensuring a transparent and fair judicial process.

However, the Home Ministry expressed concern over a recent surge in unlawful activities by certain groups. These groups have been engaging in illegal blockades, forced resignations, vandalism, arson, unauthorized searches, looting, extortion, and pressuring police to file charges without proper investigation. Instances of attacks on accused individuals in court have also been reported, all of which pose a threat to national stability.

In response, the government has reassured the public that legal proceedings will be conducted with due process, and arrests will not be made arbitrarily. All cases will undergo a thorough investigation before any legal action is taken.

The Home Ministry made it clear that any activities disrupting public safety will be met with strict legal action. The government intends to swiftly identify and take action against those involved in criminal activities, regardless of their political affiliations.

The notice further instructed that any allegations against individuals should be reported to senior officials and relevant authorities rather than resorting to unlawful actions such as blockading institutions or engaging in violence. The government reiterated its commitment to following established legal procedures in conducting searches and accepting cases, with safeguards in place to prevent harassment.

Finally, the government called on all citizens to cooperate in maintaining law and order during this transitional period.
