Advisory Council nods repealing Mujib family security law

The Advisory Council, in a meeting held on Thursday, unanimously approved the draft "Security of Family Members of the Father of the Nation (Repeal) Ordinance, 2024," subject to review by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department.

Interim government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus presided over the meeting at the state guesthouse Jamuna.

The decision to repeal the " Security of Family Members of the Father of the Nation Act, 2009" was made in response to widespread criticism of the law's discriminatory nature. 

The act had granted special security and privileges to members of the Mujib family – Mujib's two daughters, grandchildren, and in some cases, spouses or issues of the grandchildren – a practice deemed unfair and inconsistent with the principles of equality and justice.

The Advisory Council emphasized the interim government's commitment to eradicating all forms of discrimination, particularly in light of recent student protests against inequality. They argued that the repeal of this law was a necessary step towards achieving a more equitable and just society.

The family members of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had previously enjoyed comprehensive state security, including protection at their residences and free utility services.
