Ex-minister Golam Dastagir held
Former minister of textiles and jute, Awami League leader, and Chairman of Gazi Group, Golam Dastagir Gazi, was arrested early Sunday morning.
Police apprehended him from Shantinagar in Dhaka at approximately 2:45 am, according to Molla Mohammad Khalid Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station.
After his arrest in Shantinagar’s Pirer Goli, Gazi was taken to the Detective Branch office for further questioning. When asked whether his arrest was connected to a specific case, the OC stated, “A decision has not yet been made on the matter.”
Since Awami League President Sheikh Hasina resigned from her premiership and fled the country on August 5, amid a student-led mass movement, many Awami League leaders have gone into hiding.
In the past few days, several former ministers and Awami League leaders have been arrested in connection with casualties during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests and have been remanded for interrogation.
Golam Dastagir Gazi, along with Sheikh Hasina, is among 105 suspects accused in the killing of 17-year-old Roman Mia, a tenth-grade student at Naba Kishaloy High School in Narayanganj.
Gazi had been elected as the Awami League candidate for the Narayanganj-1 seat in the 12th parliamentary elections.
Following the government's fall on August 5, a Gazi Group factory was attacked and looted in the Ruposhi area of Rupganj.
