Due to rising water levels in Kaptai Lake, all gates of the dam at the Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station will be opened to prevent further complications.

According to Kaptai Water Development Board Manager, ATM Abduzzaher, the 16 spillway gates will be opened by 6 inches at 10:00pm on Saturday (August 24).

This action will release 9,000 cusecs of water per second. Depending on the situation, the gate opening may be adjusted.

Currently, 32,000 cusecs of water per second are being discharged through the power plant's five units.

The Kaptai Dam, an earth-fill dam on the Karnaphuli River, features a reservoir known as Kaptai Lake, with a water storage capacity of 6,477 million cubic meters.

The dam's primary purpose is to generate hydroelectric power, making it the only hydroelectric power station in Bangladesh.
