RMG worker murder: Shakil, Farzana put on remand

A Dhaka court has put Shakil Ahmed, former head of news at Ekattor Television, and its principal correspondent, Farzana Rupa, on a four-day remand in a case over the murder of a ready-made garment factory worker.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir passed the order on Thursday after the police produced them before the court, seeking a 10-day remand.

The law enforcers arrested Shakil and Farzana Rupa from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka on Wednesday as they attempted to flee the country.

The arrests come weeks after Ekattor Television dismissed Shakil and Farzana Rupa on August 8.

In the remand plea, the investigation officer mentioned that Fazlul Karim, a RMG factory worker, was injured after being hit by bullets fired allegedly by the Awami League men in Uttara East police station area in the capital on August 5. Later, he succumbed to his wounds in a hospital.

The officer said the victim's brother Anwar Hossain came to know that the accused - Shakil and Farzana Rupa - provocated the then Awami League government to strictly repress the students seeking reforms to the public sector jobs.
