8.5 km traffic jam on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway
A heavy traffic jam has formed on the Chittagong-bound lane of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, stretching from the Signboard point in Narayanganj to the Madanpur area.
The gridlock, which began on Wednesday morning (August 21), has caused significant suffering for both drivers and passengers.
As of 11:30am, the traffic jam persists. On-site observations reveal that passengers are facing severe difficulties due to the congestion, which has been exacerbated by torrential rain since last night. Commuters were seen standing on the highway for extended periods, drenched in the rain, while others opted to walk to their destinations.
"I came to Shimrail junction to head to Kanchpur, but when I reached the highway, I saw a massive traffic jam, so I'm walking to the office," said Billal Hossain, a local worker.
Alamgir Hossain, a bus driver, shared his frustration: "I've been stuck at Shimrail Junction for about an hour. The bus isn't moving at all. I have no idea when this traffic will clear up."
According to AKM Sharfuddin, the in-charge of Shimrail Highway Police Camp, the jam was caused by a covered van that overturned in the Langalbandh area of Sonargaon early this morning. The van has since been removed, and traffic flow is expected to improve soon.
