Cop pictured gagging protester face suspension
Arshad Hossain, an unarmed inspector (operations) of Shahbagh Police Station, who was photographed gagging a student protester during a demonstration on July 31, has been suspended.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner ordered the suspension, citing Arshad's unprofessional conduct.
The incident occurred during the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement's "March for Justice" program, where Arshad was seen gagging Nahidul Islam, a political science student from New Model Degree College in Dhaka.
The DMP said that Arshad's actions, as a member of the disciplined police force, created a negative perception of the police and damaged the force's image.
The photo of the incident quickly went viral and even inspired a graffiti depiction on a wall at Dhaka University.
In addition to gagging the protester, Arshad is also accused of labeling the demonstrators as Jamaat-Shibir activists.
