No need to call me 'Sir': Adviser Nahid
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam made it clear on Sunday that he prefers not to be addressed as ‘sir’ and requested minimal publicity of his photos.
"I have come here as your government, from the people, carrying the aspirations of a new Bangladesh. Now, I seek your cooperation," Nahid told journalists at a meeting in the Ministry of Information.
Nahid emphasised the crucial role of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in ensuring freedom of expression and overseeing the media landscape in Bangladesh.
He acknowledged the ministry's significant influence on the nation's overall freedom of expression and media environment.
Addressing the unsolved murder case of journalists Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, Nahid acknowledged the mishandling of the case and assured that the ministry would take it seriously. Additionally, he hinted at the possible formation of an Independent Media Commission, which would be decided upon after discussions with journalists.
Nahid also stressed the need to review restrictive laws that hinder media freedom.
He urged the media to assist in uncovering the truth behind the recent student uprising, calling for unbiased journalism that serves the people rather than factional interests.
"I don't want factionalism among journalists; neutral journalism should be practiced for the people," he said.
He iterated the potential establishment of an Independent Media Commission, which he promised would be deliberated with the journalistic community.
